Hi! My name is Olivia Huttinot, and I was given the Governor's Award in Arts Education for Photography. For as long as I can remember, I've always been a creative. Growing up in New York, I wasn't fascinated by buildings or sights, I was always interested in nature and art. Something about being outside and having the ability to explore with different materials always kept me in a small bubble of peace. It never mattered what art tool I got my hands on, I always created something perfectly imperfect to me. As I became older, I began to discover different kinds of art, such as fashion, pottery, and drawing landscapes. During the pandemic, I lost my sense of creativity and put my art world on hold. In 2022, I went back to school and started to make peace with art again. In my 8th grade year, photography fell right into my hands and became my new obsession. My phone was filled with sunsets, landscapes, and more. As my curiosity grew, so did the pictures. Receiving this award made me feel extremely humbled and grateful, thank you for recognizing my work.

The Governor’s Awards in Arts Education began in 1980 to promote awareness and appreciation of the arts, recognizing the creativity, talent and leadership of the award winners. Each year, awards are presented to approximately 20 educators and 80 students. National and statewide organizations select the students for their exemplary work in creative writing, speech, dance, music, theatre and visual arts and the leaders for their exceptional commitment and contribution to arts education. The program also recognizes arts educators and arts education advocates, whose leadership has helped nurture the development of students in the arts across the state.
